Bio: Dr. Gumel is a Professor and The Michael and Eugenia Brin Endowed E-Nnovate Chair at the Department of Mathematics, University of Maryland. Prior to coming to Maryland in Fall 2022, Dr. Gumel was a Foundation Professor at the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Arizona State University. His work focuses on the use of mathematical modeling approaches and analysis, together with data analytics, to gain insight and understanding on the spread and control of  emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of major public health significance. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Mathematical Biosciences, a premier journal for mathematical biology research.  Accolades and honors include: the 2021 Bellman Prize, Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), American Mathematical Society (AMS), Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), African Academy of Science (AAS), Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award of the Canadian Applied Mathematics Society (CAIMS), and presenting the 2021 Einstein Public Lecture of the American Mathematical Society.
